Maldives Flights Suspended: EaseMyTrip, the online travel platform, has taken a decisive step by temporarily halting all flight reservations to the Maldives. In essence, all Maldives’ flights have been suspended by the travel platform. Nishant Pitti, the CEO and co-founder, made the announcement on January 08, 2024 via X (formerly Twitter).

This strategic move of Maldives’ flights being suspended follows a surge in the online campaign calling for a boycott of the island nation, triggered by derogatory remarks made by Maldivian ministers on the microblogging platform, targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India.

The travel solutions provider has initiated a compelling ‘Visit Lakshadweep’ campaign, signaling a strategic shift towards promoting domestic destinations. Despite anticipating a potential short-term decline in international tourism on the platform, Pitti expressed the company’s commitment to prioritize and showcase the enchanting beauty of Lakshadweep over foreign locations.

The Unfortunate Background: Why EaseMyTrip suspended Maldives bookings?
EaseMyTrip’s suspension of Maldives bookings stemmed from the usage of derogatory language by three Maldivian deputy ministers – Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Sharyf, and Mahzoom Majid – against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India. The Maldivian government took swift action, suspending the ministers for their “irresponsible” and “insulting” statements. Despite this, the travel body noted the persistence of calls among Indian social media users to opt for domestic alternatives over traveling to the Maldives.
India’s significant importance for the Maldives
India holds significant importance for the Maldives in the realm of tourism. Indian travelers frequently choose the Maldives as a favored destination, attracted by its stunning beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and luxurious resorts. The geographical proximity ensures convenient travel, and the historical and cultural ties between the two nations contribute to a shared understanding and appreciation of each other’s attractions.

The ease of access, coupled with strong diplomatic relations, enhances the overall travel experience. Additionally, the Maldives serves as an exotic and serene getaway for Indian tourists seeking a tropical paradise. The robust air connectivity, cultural exchanges, and economic collaboration further solidify India’s role as a crucial tourism partner for the Maldives, fostering continued growth in the sector and strengthening the bond between the two nations.
MATATO Appeals for Reconsideration: Urgent Request to EaseMyTrip CEO Regarding Flight Bookings to the Maldives
In a heartfelt appeal on January 9, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) reached out to EaseMyTrip’s CEO, Nishant Pitti, urging a reconsideration of the decision to cancel flight bookings to the Maldives through their platform. This move comes in response to recent controversies involving derogatory remarks made by three Maldivian deputy ministers against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading to the suspension of the said ministers.
The Deep-rooted Connection
MATATO emphasized the enduring bonds between India and the Maldives, transcending mere business associations to portray a relationship akin to cherished siblings.
“The bonds connecting our nations transcend politics. We consider our Indian counterparts not just as business associates but as cherished brothers and sisters,” the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) said.
Acknowledging the significance of the Indian market, Abdulla Ghiyas, President of MATATO, highlighted that Indian visitors are not just tourists but an “indispensable force” vital to the success of the Maldivian tourism sector.
“MATATO humbly seeks your assistance and support in fostering positive relations and dispelling any misunderstandings that may have arisen and reopen EaseMyTrip flights to Maldives,” he added.

Economic Interdependence
Ghiyas, in his letter to Pitti, underlined the crucial role played by the Indian market in supporting guest houses and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Maldives, which heavily depend on the influx of Indian visitors. He expressed the association’s humble plea for assistance and support from EaseMyTrip to foster positive relations and dispel any misunderstandings, ultimately urging the reopening of flight bookings to the Maldives.
Maldives flights suspended – Tourism as LifebloodÂ
The travel body shed light on the pivotal role tourism plays in the Maldives, constituting over two-thirds of the nation’s GDP and providing livelihoods to approximately 44,000 Maldivians. They stressed the potential adverse impact of the suspension of EaseMyTrip bookings on the archipelago’s economy, warning of severe repercussions that could affect the lives and well-being of many.
MATATO’s appeal serves as a plea for unity, understanding, and collaboration, aiming to safeguard the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and India. As the travel industry faces challenges arising from geopolitical incidents, the hope is to restore harmony and cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations.
