Morning: Calm Before the Storm
By late morning, hundreds of tourists had already entered Baisaran Valley after securing their entry tickets at the main gate. The valley was buzzing with excitement and exploration. As the clock approached 1:30 PM, over 1,000 tickets had been sold, marking a significant footfall in the area. By that time, the majority of the tourists had left the valley, and around 400 individuals still remained, unaware of the horrific events that were about to unfold.
1:45 PM: The Attack Begins
At 1:45 PM, the first signs of something sinister appeared. The first attacker, most likely Adil Thokar, entered the valley, disguised in a traditional Kashmiri pheran. Concealed beneath his robe was a firearm. Without arousing suspicion, he mingled with the public and approached the main entry-exit gate. Once there, he suddenly pulled out his weapon and fired into the airโdeliberately not aiming at people initially. The objective was clear: create panic and drive the crowd toward the main gate.
As the frightened crowd began to gather near the gate, two more terrorists, dressed in military-style tracksuits, jumped over the fencing from the jungle side. These men, suspected to be Musa and a militant referred to as Ali Bhai, stood in strategic positions. Tourists mistook them for security personnel, further adding to the confusion.

A Well-Planned Ambush
What unfolded next was not a random act of violence but a well-orchestrated trap. The attackers had blocked both the entry and exit points, effectively cornering the tourists. Gunfire broke out from both directions, leaving people with nowhere to run. As chaos spread, tourists in different parts of the large valley remained unaware of the gravity of the situationโsome even continued with activities like zip-lining.
Near the food stallsโwhere items like tea and bhelpuri were being servedโthe attackers started herding the crowd. They separated men and women, and the atrocities escalated. Within just 50 meters of the main gate, the attackers began interrogating male tourists, asking their religion. Those who did not immediately respond were forced to recite the Kalma. One of the survivors, Debashish Bhattacharya, was asked to recite the Kalma, which he didโleading the terrorists to leave him unharmed. Another man, a Christian, was reportedly asked to make statements about the Palestine conflict.
Systematic Killings
Some male tourists were reportedly stripped to verify religious identity. Confirmed Hindu tourists were executed at close range. One of the heroes of this tragic episode was Adil Hussain, a local pony rider who was guiding tourists through the valley. When one of his tourists was shot, Adil attempted to wrest the weapon from a terrorist. In retaliation, the militants shot him three times, killing him on the spot.
The terrorists were armed with M4 rifles and AK-47s. They had GoPro-style cameras mounted on their bodies, and they recorded the massacre. Chillingly, they even took selfies with the bodies of those they had just killedโmementos of their barbarism.
Aftermath of the Massacre
The brutal attack lasted for about 25 minutes. By the end of it, 26 innocent people had lost their lives. As the terrorists prepared their escape, they snatched two mobile phones from the crowd and used the left-side wall fencing to jump into the dense forest, vanishing into the wilderness.
What remained was a scene of unspeakable horror. Survivors cried out for their loved ones and screamed for help, but there was none to be found. The vastness of the valley, the remoteness of the location, and the suddenness of the attack made an organized rescue impossible in those first critical moments.
The Tragedy at Baisaran Valley: A Day Kashmir Will Never Forget
The Baisaran Valley massacre of April 22, 2025, remains one of the most cold-blooded and calculated acts of terror in recent times. It was not just an attack on individuals but a targeted assault against civilians, carried out in broad daylight under a deceptive disguise of peace and normalcy.
What was meant to be a day of natural beauty and family bonding turned into a scene of anguish and helplessness. The world must remember not just the brutality of the act but also the resilience of those who tried to save lives, like Adil Hussain, who paid the ultimate price.
This incident stands as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by radical extremism and the pressing need for constant vigilanceโeven in places meant for joy, serenity, and escape.
