Feroze Gandhi’s Family Background
Feroze Gandhi was born on 12 September 1912 in Bombay (now Mumbai). He belonged to a Parsi Zoroastrian family, a community with its own distinct religious identity. His father, Jehangir Gandhy, and mother, Ratimai, were practicing Parsis. The family name, spelled as Gandhy, was typical among Parsis and had no link to the surname “Khan,” which is commonly associated with Muslims.
Feroze grew up in a culturally rich Parsi household, where traditions, rituals, and values were distinctly different from either Hindu or Muslim customs. This establishes clearly that he was neither born a Muslim nor was he associated with Islam at any stage of his life.
The Spelling Change: Gandhy to Gandhi
Another element that contributed to the myth was the change in the spelling of Feroze’s surname. Originally “Gandhy,” the name was later written as “Gandhi,” which coincidentally aligned with Mahatma Gandhi’s surname. This created further scope for speculation.
Critics argued that the name change was a deliberate attempt to forge an association with Mahatma Gandhi and gain political legitimacy. In reality, variations in the spelling of surnames were common during the British colonial period, and “Gandhy” was often phonetically written as “Gandhi.”
Importantly, this had nothing to do with religion. The spelling shift did not transform his Parsi identity into either a Hindu or Muslim one.
Marriage to Indira Nehru
Feroze Gandhi married Indira Nehru in 1942, in a Hindu ceremony attended by several prominent leaders of the time, including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. The wedding took place in accordance with Hindu Vedic rituals, not under Islamic customs.
This further negates the claim that Feroze was a Muslim named Firoz Khan. If he had indeed been a Muslim, the marriage would have required a very different religious procedure, and it is unlikely that leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru would have presided over it in that manner.
Feroze Gandhi’s Political Career
Feroze Gandhi was more than just the husband of Indira Gandhi. He was an independent and courageous parliamentarian. Elected to the Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli, he became known for his relentless pursuit of corruption cases. His exposure of financial irregularities in major business houses, including the Haridas Mundhra scandal, shook the political establishment.
Feroze Gandhi’s fearless questioning made him a respected figure in Indian politics. Unfortunately, his legacy has often been overshadowed by the myths surrounding his personal life.
Why the Myth Persists
The persistence of the claim that Feroze Gandhi was a Muslim or Khan can be attributed to political rivalry, misinformation, and the lack of widespread access to authentic historical records. In a polarized political environment, personal attacks are often used as tools to undermine credibility.
For the Nehru-Gandhi family, which has dominated Indian politics for decades, such myths have been repeated in cycles, particularly during times of heightened political contest.
