The BCI has sought details on Mamata Banerjee’s advocate status after her appearance in lawyer robes before the Calcutta High Court.

Mamata Banerjee recently appeared before the Calcutta High Court wearing advocate robes. The move prompted the Bar Council of India to seek clarification on her legal practice status.

In a May 14, 2026 letter, the BCI asked the Bar Council of West Bengal to submit records before May 16. The Council referred to advocate conduct and dress rules.

The BCI wants details about Banerjee’s enrolment number and date of registration. It also asked whether her name still exists on the State Roll of Advocates.

The Council asked whether Banerjee suspended or stopped legal practice during her tenure as Chief Minister. It also sought details about any later request to resume practice.

The BCI has asked for certified copies of all supporting records. It also directed authorities to preserve the original documents.
