Police on Friday registered an FIR against TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee under non-bailable sections over remarks allegedly made against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during an election rally last month.
The FIR was filed after a complaint by Rajiv Sarkar, who alleged that Abhishek Banerjee issued threats against Amit Shah and other BJP leaders while addressing supporters during a political roadshow in Kolkata.
Police said the FIR has been registered under BNS Sections 196, 351, and 353(1)(c), dealing with promotion of enmity, criminal intimidation, and circulation of false information intended to incite hatred.
Abhishek Banerjee has also been booked under Section 123(2) and Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which relate to electoral misconduct and promotion of hatred during the election process.
The FIR has added fresh political tension between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the controversy expected to intensify political debate in West Bengal during the ongoing election season.
