The Beginning: How an Innocent Mistake Sparked a Storm
On June 10, 2022, a controversial post appeared on Kanhaiya Lal’s Facebook account. The post allegedly supported Nupur Sharma, whose earlier comments had already caused nationwide unrest. The display picture on his profile was also of Nupur Sharma.
But according to Kanhaiya Lal, it wasn’t him who posted it. In his written complaint to the police on June 15, he stated that his young son was playing games on his phone, and the post was shared accidentally. He clearly mentioned that he had no knowledge of it and that people were threatening him after the post went viral. He requested police protection fearing for his life.
The First Encounter: The Men Who Came to Borrow a Phone
On the same day as the post, two men, Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghaus, came to his tailoring shop. They politely asked to borrow his phone, saying they had no balance left and needed to make a quick call. Kanhaiya Lal, being a kind man, handed over his phone without hesitation. The two then deleted the controversial post and told him, “Don’t do such things again,” before leaving quietly.
At the time, it seemed like a minor misunderstanding that had been settled. But these were the same two men who would return days later to end his life.
Police Negligence and Growing Fear
On June 11, a neighbour named Nazim filed an FIR against Kanhaiya Lal over the Facebook post. The tailor was arrested, but later released on bail. After his release, he started receiving death threats regularly. Out of fear, he didn’t open his shop from June 12 to June 15. When the fear became unbearable, he again approached the police, this time seeking security and action against those threatening him.
However, instead of protecting him, the police arranged a so-called “compromise” between the two communities. Both sides were made to sign a paper stating that the issue was resolved. Believing things had calmed down, Kanhaiya Lal reopened his shop on June 28.
June 28, 2022: The Day That Shattered Peace
At around 2:30 PM, Riyaz and Ghaus walked into Supreme Tailors again, pretending to be customers who wanted a kurta stitched. Within moments, they drew sharp knives and attacked Kanhaiya Lal mercilessly. One of them hacked him to death, while the other recorded the entire murder on video.
The horrific video spread across social media within hours, sparking national outrage. Kanhaiya Lal’s assistant, who tried to intervene, was also injured in the attack.
The Escape and Chilling Videos
After committing the murder, the two accused fled on foot and reached home, where they recorded three videos, one claiming responsibility, another issuing violent threats, and a third where they called themselves “soldiers of faith.”
Investigations later revealed that they had planned to kill Kanhaiya Lal even if he hadn’t opened his shop that day, they were prepared to attack him at home. They escaped wearing helmets on a bike carrying the number 2611 – a deliberate reference to the Mumbai terror attacks of 26/11, showing their extremist mindset.
Pakistan Connection and a Deeper Conspiracy
The investigation took a disturbing turn when it was discovered that Mohammad Ghaus had travelled to Pakistan in 2014, staying there for around 45 days. He had gone from Udaipur to Nepal and then to Karachi, where he became associated with an organisation called Dawat-e-Islami, known for spreading hardline religious ideology.
Even after returning to India, he kept in contact with people in Karachi. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) later uncovered that this was not an isolated hate crime but part of a larger radical network. Over 30 individuals were eventually detained for their links to extremist groups and involvement in inciting violence.
Udaipur Erupts: Fear, Anger, and Division
As soon as the murder video surfaced, Udaipur descended into chaos. There were protests, stone-pelting, internet shutdowns, and curfew-like restrictions under Section 144 Cr.PC. This area had always been peaceful, with both Hindu and Muslim communities living harmoniously – but this one act of terror destroyed that fragile peace.
Across India, there was collective shock and fury. Questions were raised – if Kanhaiya Lal had already sought protection, why didn’t the police act? Could this tragedy have been prevented?
