Mumbai has reported 82 cases of missing minors and young adults in just 36 days, raising serious concerns in a city known for its safety.
Police officials say the actual number may be higher, as many cases are not reported due to fear, hesitation, social stigma, and taboos.
Most missing cases involve older adolescents, especially 18-year-olds. Among them are 41 girls and 13 boys, along with children as young as 5 and 11 years old.
Several police stations have reported multiple cases, including Kurar Village, Vakola, Powai, Malwani, and Sakinaka, indicating a city-wide issue.
Data from the last six months shows 134 minors missing across Mumbai, including 86 girls. Monthly cases ranged between 19 and 26.
Meanwhile, unverified messages on WhatsApp and social media have created panic. Police say some claims and images circulating online may be false or AI-generated.
Authorities urge citizens to stay alert and report any information immediately by calling 112 or the 1098 Childline helpline.
